Of the ninety-three Angus, Charolais, Hereford, Shorthorn, Red Angus, Simmental and crossbred bulls sold at the 2014 Pennsylvania Performance Test Bull Sale held at the Livestock Evaluation Center, Pennsylvania Furnace, PA, on March 28, 2014, Pennsylvania Simmental Association members Ron and Rhonda Dziembowski, Double RD Farm, Dudley, MA, had the high selling lot!  Their Simmental bull, DRD Loves Dream Boy, who is sired by Dream On and out of a Powerline cow, brought $8,900 and was purchased by PSA members Steve and Barb Lucariello, Back Road Ranch, Sherman, NY.

Two other bulls brought $5,000 each — a Simmental bull consigned by PSA member Larry Bullis, Belmont Steaks Farm, Gettysburg, PA, and a SimAngus bull consigned by new PSA members Jonah and Abbey Broughton, Sunrise Farms, Attica, NY.  The Simmental bulls averaged $3,133, and the SimAngus had the highest averaged of the sale at $3,700.

Below is the full news release from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

Pennsylvania Hosts Quarter-Million Dollar Performance-Tested Bull Sale

Pennsylvania Furnace – Beef producers earned $265,700 for top-quality bulls at the 41st Pennsylvania Performance Tested Bull Sale, Friday, March 28, at the Pennsylvania Livestock Evaluation Center in Pennsylvania Furnace, Centre County.

Producers from across Pennsylvania and neighboring states sold 93 Angus, Charolais, Hereford, Shorthorn, Red Angus, Simmental and crossbred bulls. The bulls averaged $2,857 per head.

Topping the sale at $8,900 was a Simmental from Double RD Farm of Dudley, Mass., sold to Back Road Ranch of Sherman, N.Y. Two bulls sold for $5,000: a Simmental consigned by Belmont Steaks Farm of Gettysburg, Adams County, and purchased by Gary Fosbaugh of Keymar, Md., and a SimAngus consigned by Sunrise Farms of Attica, N.Y., sold to Ray Dart of Smethport, McKean County.

Fifty-three Angus bulls averaged $2,823, one Charolais brought $3,000, eight Herefords averaged $2,213, one Shorthorn brought $2,700, seven Red Angus averaged $2,786, 21 Simmentals averaged $3,133 and two SimAngus averaged $3,700.

The bulls completed a 112-day test at the center that evaluated average daily gain, carcass traits and feed efficiency. After the testing period, the bulls were ultrasonically scanned to determine ribeye area, marbling and fat thickness and examined for breeding soundness.

Since 1973, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Performance Bull Testing Program has provided the state’s beef industry with a way to measure inherited traits through sire evaluation. The center has adapted with advancing technology, offering expanded information on bulls and enhancing their marketability to potential buyers. Careful guidance and foresight have developed the center into a regional hub for improving the beef industry.
